Jim Godfrey

Coach

“There’s no point beating about the bush!” This informal but direct approach pretty much sums up Jim’s’s style of coaching. And it’s a tack appreciated by clients who want to shake things up. Here, he shares what he loves about coaching…

I started my career in public service and politics. Coaching feels like a return to that, but just reaching one person at a time. I’m often told I’m really easy to talk to, which is a great quality in this line of work. I also love it when my clients tell me I’m being too firm, but that it’s probably the right thing to do.

I am a big fan of the radical candour approach – challenge directly but care passionately. It’s what helps me get the best out of my clients, especially those who want to get off the treadmill and mix things up.

I coach a lot of women via a US platform, whose biggest issue is that they feel their voice is not being heard. For me, helping them speak up and make waves feels great. My favourite question to ask is ‘What’s that?’ It’s simple, but effective.

Outside of coaching, I support climate change charities and campaigns. Closer to home, I support local homeless organisations, such as Julian House and Genesis.

For pleasure, I’m a sucker for Tony’s Chocolate (it’s impossible not to eat the whole bar) and buying kit for my music studio.
